Nayang Nua Village
History of Nayang Nua Village, Nambak District Luang Prabang Province
1. History:
Ban Nayang Neua is a Tai Leu ethnic village. According to the oral histories passed down through generations, the Leu people who settled in Ban Nayang originated from the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province in the People’s Republic of China. They migrated to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in 1354 AD. Initially, there were about 13 families with a total population of 55 people. In the early days, the village had no name because the people had migrated from other places. This area was abundant with natural resources, including fertile land, rivers, mountains, and forests.
Older villagers recount that the name “Nayang” comes from the “Nokyang” Little Egret, which used to forage in the rice paddies. Another interpretation suggests that the name might have originated from China, as “Nayang” could refer to a large pond where many “Nokyang” Little Egret gathered to seek food. Thus, the villagers named the village “Ban Nayang” after these birds. Later, as the village developed and the population grew, it was divided into two: Ban Nayang Neua and Ban Nayang Tai.
Both villages uphold beautiful traditions and their people are known for their diligence and hard work. Besides farming, they are also skilled in silk weaving, a craft passed down from their ancestors. Therefore, the local authorities, in collaboration with the village administrations, have designated both villages as cultural villages and community-based tourism destinations. These villages offer visitors a chance to experience the way of life, customs, traditions, and silk weaving of the Leu people. The villages also provide homestays, allowing both domestic and international tourists to immerse themselves in the local culture.
